Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a system of primary health care that includes acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, remedial massage (anmo tuina), exercise and breathing therapy (such as qigong), and diet and lifestyle advice. In the UK, the most popular forms of TCM health care are acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.
Chinese herbalism
Chinese herbalism is by far the most developed. It has been continuously refined over thousands of years, to the poin that it is now more sophisticated in itis clinical applications than the pharmacy of Western biomedicine. The indications, contraindications, and potential side effects are better known in the Chinese system, and that formualtions are devised to minimize side effect that would be considered a tolerable nuisance in the Western system. Furthermore, Chinese medicien can treat many conditions for which Western medicien has nothing to offer -- most notably the deficiency syndromes treated with Chinese tonic herbs. The minimization of side effects while maintaining clinical effcacy is the chief benefit of Chinese formulas to the Western clinician. When side effects to Chinese formulas occur, they tend to be minor.
